The Party of DeLay, Abramoff, Grant, and Nixon
President Bush's attempts to distance himself from DeLay and Abramoff are as convincing as Nixon's "I am not a crook" statement. Sure, apologists for the president won't see the connections, but, then again, Nixon had his apologists, as well. Eventually, the test of time proved beyond doubt how deep and profound the corruption of Watergate and the secret bombing of Cambodia went.
DeLay's fundraising is Bush's Watergate. The Middle East is his Southeast Asia. These may not bring down his presidency, but they will leave it severely tarnished in the eyes of historians. Unfortunately, no justice on earth will visit Bush or his administration: the Imperial Presidency is immune from such worldly cares.
Is America now an absolutist nation? Not entirely. L'état, ce n'est pas bush. But he is foolish enough to qualify for another famous French king's phrase. He is wasting the money of a nation on foolish ventures that enrich his close friends and family members. He is responsible for massive debts the nation cannot afford to repay. He has not built a foundation, but cracked it. Louis XIV, The Sun King, said he was the state of France. Louis XV squandered what he inherited from his father. As he reckoned with his legacy, he said, "Après moi, le déluge."
Heaven help the next president of the United States of America. The party of DeLay, Abramoff, Grant, and Nixon has left the nation in a terrible condition.
